Photoepilation in Dubai: how many sessions and does it hurt

A single session does not remove hair forever - and that is completely normal. We explain how AFT/SHR photoepilation on the Alma Harmony XL differs from classic laser, why a course of treatments is needed and why the method suits any skin type.

When people say "laser hair removal", they usually mean a classic diode or alexandrite laser. At SOLAR we use a different approach - AFT photoepilation (an advanced IPL technology) and the SHR mode on the multifunctional Alma Harmony XL platform. The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair and heats the follicle - but it only works on hairs in the active growth phase, which is why a course is needed rather than a single visit.

How AFT photoepilation differs from classic laser

Classic lasers work at a single fixed wavelength: the alexandrite laser (755 nm) is effective on light skin with dark hair, while the diode laser (808 nm) is safer for darker skin but less effective on fine hair. A single wavelength is always a compromise. AFT photoepilation on the Harmony XL uses a wide light spectrum of 755-1064 nm: the doctor selects the parameters for your skin type, the spectrum captures both coarse and fine hair, and the method suits everything from light to dark and tanned skin - which is especially important in Dubai with its year-round sun.

The SHR mode (Super Hair Removal) heats the follicle gradually, with a series of gentle pulses as the applicator glides across the skin - instead of a single powerful flash.

Why several sessions are needed

Hair grows in cycles. At any given moment only 20-30% of hairs are in the active phase (anagen), when the light can "see" them. The rest are dormant and become vulnerable later. That is why sessions are repeated at intervals of 4-6 weeks, "switching off" new batches of follicles.

Does it hurt

This is the main practical difference of the method. With classic laser hair removal, the sensation is often described as "the snap of a rubber band". Photoepilation in SHR mode feels noticeably gentler: the follicle is heated gradually, the applicator moves continuously and the skin is cooled. Most patients describe the procedure as a warm tingling; anaesthetic is generally not required.

At SOLAR, hair removal is carried out using the AFT/SHR method on the Alma Harmony XL - suitable for any skin type, including dark and pigmentation-prone skin. The parameters are selected by the doctor to match your skin and hair type.

How to prepare

What not to expect

"Gone forever in one go" is not possible with any device. The realistic result is a long-term reduction in hair growth after the full course, with occasional maintenance 1-2 times a year. Dark hair responds best; grey and very light hair respond more weakly, and we tell you this openly.
