Practical tip. A phlebotomist is not a lab technician: the phlebotomist collects and prepares samples and cares for the patient, the lab technician or technologist processes and analyses them. A home care nurse can collect blood too, but a dedicated phlebotomist is usually faster for a busy collection point or a home-visit route. The most common hiring mistakes: testing only the puncture and not the labelling and transport routine, and hiring for home visits without checking punctuality and how the candidate behaves in a client's home.

Test the whole routine on a training arm (identification, tube order, labelling, sharps), a paperwork task with your test panels and a few patient scenarios. For home visits also check route planning, punctuality and how samples are kept cool and handed over to the lab, and ask the previous employer about complaints from home clients.
