Typical hiring mistake: hiring a data analyst before the data exists. If sales are in WhatsApp chats and stock in a notebook, start with a CRM administrator or a process fix, then hire the analyst. Another mistake: hiring a data scientist to build reports that a strong data analyst with SQL and Power BI would do faster. A business analyst designs processes and requirements; a data analyst measures what happens.

Use a small dataset that looks like yours, with a few errors in it. Ask three business questions, for example which branch or product lost margin and why. Look at whether the candidate finds the errors, writes clean SQL or formulas and explains the answer simply. Then ask them to present one finding to a non-technical manager in five minutes.
