Cost of living in Dubai: everyday prices groceries, transport, eating out, phone, gym and fun, with the places where it costs less

The sentence "Dubai is expensive" usually comes from a tourist week: a hotel breakfast, taxis everywhere, a beach club, dinner with a view. A resident's Dubai is a different city, with budget supermarkets, a cheap and clean metro, free beaches, cafeterias where a full meal costs what a coffee costs downtown, and the same brands as at home at comparable prices. Everything is available here; what you pay depends on whether you know the places. This guide walks through the everyday lines of a newcomer's budget, gives orientation ranges for autumn 2026 and, for each line, the legitimate ways residents spend less. Check current prices yourself with the methods at the end; your month will differ from any example.

Groceries: the store tier decides the bill

Dubai has every tier of supermarket, often within the same block. The same weekly basket can differ by half between tiers, which is why "groceries are expensive" and "groceries are cheap" are both said by honest people. Orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices.

Eating out: from cafeteria to rooftop

Dubai eats out a lot, and the price range is one of the widest of any city: the same evening can cost 20 AED or 2,000. The resident's trick is knowing that the cheap end is excellent, not a compromise. Orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices.

Transport: metro, bus, taxi, car

The metro and buses in Dubai are clean, air-conditioned, safe and inexpensive; the only question is whether your home and your workplace are on the line. Taxis are affordable by big-city standards and a car is a choice, not a necessity, in the first year. Orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices.

Phone, internet, gym, beauty, entertainment

The lines people forget until the first month's statement. None of them is expensive if chosen consciously. Orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices.

Three everyday budgets for one person, as an orientation

Not statistics, not an average: three ways to live the same month in the same city, without rent. Orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices. The point is that the difference between them is choices you control.

How we help

TLNT is a hiring consultancy. We help employers in Dubai find and assess candidates, including specialists who relocate; the employer makes the hiring decision, agrees the salary and the package with you directly and sponsors the work visa for the person they hire. When we introduce you to an employer we tell you plainly what the package includes, so that your everyday budget starts from facts. We never promise a job.

For candidates: send your CV through our candidates page or build one in the free CV builder; we let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.

Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.

FAQ

Is 8,000 AED a month enough to live in Dubai?

For one person, yes, with choices: a room in a shared apartment at 1,500 to 3,500 AED and a careful to comfortable everyday budget of 1,800 to 4,000 leaves room to save; a studio of your own at 3,500 to 7,000 a month equivalent is possible but leaves a thinner margin. There is no income tax on the salary and the employer provides health insurance, which changes the arithmetic compared with many cities. Orientation for autumn 2026; check current prices.

Where do residents in Dubai buy cheaper groceries and eat cheaper?

Groceries: Union Coop, Nesto, Viva and the cooperative societies for the budget tier, Carrefour and Lulu with their app deals for the mid tier, Waterfront Market and local shops for fruit and vegetables. Food: cafeterias in Karama, Al Rigga, Satwa and Deira serve full meals at 10 to 30 AED; weekday happy hours, discount apps and bank card offers cut restaurant bills. Public beaches, parks and building gyms are free.
