What is headhunting and how it works in Dubai

What headhunting means, how it differs from regular recruitment and executive search, how to approach an employed specialist fairly and legally, and what to keep in mind in the UAE.

In short: headhunting is finding people who are employed and not looking for a job, and personally offering them a move. It is used for key and rare roles where the best candidates are not among the applicants. In the UAE, check the candidate's contract for a non-compete clause before the offer: the law allows one for up to 2 years after employment ends. The start date depends on the notice period at the current job, usually 30 to 90 days under UAE law.

What headhunting is

In regular recruitment the employer posts a vacancy and chooses from those who apply. Headhunting works the other way round: first you find out where the right people work, then you approach them personally. The candidate is not looking, so the conversation is not "we have a vacancy" but what the new role can give them: growth, money, a team, conditions, harder problems.

"Headhunting" and "executive search" are often used as synonyms. Executive search usually means searching for top management, while headhunting covers any key specialist who has to be attracted from another employer.

How headhunting works: 6 steps

1
Profile and package

What results you need from the person in 6-12 months and what you are ready to offer. Headhunting does not work without a market package.

2
Market map

A list of companies with this experience and the people in them: competitors, adjacent industries, other emirates and countries.

3
First contact

A short personal message or call without the company name. The aim is not to sell the vacancy but to find out whether the person is open to a conversation.

4
Assessment

Interviews on real cases, references, licence checks and a practical check on a model where relevant.

5
Offer and counteroffer

The current employer often tries to keep a strong person. Discuss with the candidate in advance what matters to them beyond money.

6
Notice and start

The candidate serves the notice period in their contract. Stay in touch the whole time: this is the most fragile stage.

How to approach an employed specialist fairly

Doing it yourself or with a consultant

Headhunting on your own works when the owner has time and personal connections in the industry. But a first contact in a competitor's name often ends the conversation, and a confidential replacement of a current employee is impossible without an intermediary. A consultant approaches candidates without naming your company, handles the negotiation and assesses people before you meet them.

At TLNT this is a separate service: headhunting. It covers the market map, confidential approach, assessment, shortlist and support until the start date. The employer makes the hiring decision and agrees the terms.
