What a hire really costs on top of salary

The salary line is only part of the cost of a person. Budget these items for every employee, the exact amounts depend on the visa route, the insurer and the contract.

• Work permit, residence visa, medical test and Emirates ID
• Health insurance, which employers in Dubai must provide
• Occupational health card for staff who work with clients
• End of service gratuity accrual: under UAE labour law, 21 days of basic salary per year for the first five years
• Paid annual leave and, if the contract says so, a ticket home
• Accommodation or transport, which some salons provide for entry-level staff
• Recruitment fee or the time and ads spent on hiring yourself

Pricing logic we see in salons that make money

• Prices follow the master level: junior, senior and top masters have different price lists for the same service
• Commission is calculated on a clear base (price after discount, or net of VAT and materials), written into the contract
• Discounts are rare and targeted: first visit, off-peak hours, packages, not a permanent sale
• The price list is reviewed at least once a year against real cost per hour, not only against competitors

Staffing patterns

• Hire the salon manager first when opening, then masters, then administrators
• Strong masters move for commission and a full schedule, not for a slightly higher base
• Check who owns the client relationship: the salon, or the master's personal Instagram
• Administrators decide how many enquiries turn into bookings, so they are a revenue role, not a cost

Demand through the year: practical observations

These are patterns we and salon owners see in Dubai, not measured statistics. Check them against your own booking data.

• Cooler months, roughly October to April, are the busy season with events, weddings and tourists
• July and August are usually slower as many residents travel; good time for staff leave and training
• During Ramadan demand shifts to the evening, with a peak in the days before Eid
• Before public holidays and big events, hair, makeup and nails book out first
