A top seller is not automatically a good manager. The checks show whether the candidate can make other people sell and read the numbers behind a team.
Typical hiring mistake: promoting or hiring the best seller and expecting the team to copy them. Ask for a team result, not a personal one. How it differs from neighbours: a sales executive sells personally against a target; a business development manager opens new partners, markets or channels; a sales manager runs the people and the pipeline that already exist and owns the team's number.

When the owner spends hours every week checking who called whom, leads get lost between sellers and nobody can give a monthly forecast. With two sellers the owner can still manage them; with four or more, or several lead sources, a sales manager usually pays for the time the owner gets back. Check the CRM first: without it, any manager will spend the first month rebuilding the data.
