Myth: any receptionist can run insurance approvals and who should own them in a Dubai clinic

A clinic receptionist needs no medical licence and already takes the insurance card, so approvals look like one more form at the desk. In practice they are a separate skill, and rejected claims are silent revenue loss that nobody sees at the desk.

Myth and fact about clinic receptionists and insurance approvals in Dubai, explained by Stan, Head of Hiring Department, TLNT.ae

Why the myth sounds true

Part of it is true. Reception does check eligibility and network before the visit and collects the co-pay, and in a clinic with few insured patients one strong person at the desk can cover the rest. The mistake is to assume this applies to any receptionist: on our clinic receptionist page, insurance approvals and billing basics are listed as a strong plus, not as something every front desk candidate brings.

What an approval actually involves

In Dubai, eligibility checks, prior authorisations, claims and remittances go electronically through eClaimLink and the DHA Health Post Office (DHPO). Our eClaimLink guide follows one claim through five steps. The approval part alone asks for this:

Where the clinic loses money

Most rejections come from preventable causes. Three of the typical mistakes start with people, not with the portal:

When a receptionist is enough

It depends on the share of insured patients and the number of doctors. If only a few patients come with insurance, a receptionist with insurance experience is often enough. Once about half of the patients are insured or there are three or more doctors, a dedicated insurance officer usually pays for themselves by cutting rejections. Aesthetic and cosmetic services are usually excluded from cover, so an aesthetic clinic may not need insurance panels at all.

How to test the skill before the offer

A CV line saying "insurance experience" tells you little. Ask for the work itself:

FAQ

Can a receptionist handle insurance approvals in a Dubai clinic?

A receptionist with insurance experience can, in a small clinic where only a few patients are insured. Once about half of the patients are insured or there are three or more doctors, a dedicated insurance officer is usually the better choice.

How much does a receptionist with insurance experience earn in Dubai?

About 7,000 - 10,000 AED a month, compared with 4,500 - 7,000 AED for a receptionist and 6,000 - 10,000 AED for an insurance officer, according to the Dubai Salary Index 2026.

How long does it take to hire this person?

First candidates come in days. Hiring usually takes 1-3 weeks for a clinic receptionist and 2-3 weeks for an insurance officer. The employer decides, employs the person directly and sponsors the visa; our fee is fixed per role.
