Salary vs cost of living in Dubai: how to calculate a method that answers "is X AED enough" for your own case

"Is 8,000 AED enough to live in Dubai?" is the most asked question before a move, and every honest answer starts with "it depends on how you live". Dubai has everything at every price: a shared room and a sea-view apartment, a bus pass and a leased SUV, a supermarket where groceries cost less than in Moscow and a deli where they cost more than in London. So this guide gives you a method rather than a verdict: how to read the offer package, how to list fixed and variable costs with orientation ranges, how to set a savings target and how to see in ten minutes whether a given salary works for you. Three examples by salary tier show the method in action; they are examples, not benchmarks. The live salary pages give the market ranges by role.

Step 1: read the package, not the headline number

A Dubai offer is a package. Two offers with the same headline can differ by 3,000 AED a month in real terms once you look at what is included. Write the package as separate lines before you compare it with anything.

Step 2: list your fixed monthly costs

Fixed costs are the lines you pay whether the month went well or not. The ranges are an orientation, autumn 2026, check current prices; rent on Bayut, Property Finder and Dubizzle, utilities on the DEWA site, transport on the RTA site.

LineOrientation, AED per monthHow to check it yourself
Shared room in a shared apartmentroughly 1,500 - 3,000Dubizzle, community groups; ask how many people share the flat
Studio, outer districts (International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Al Nahda, Deira, JVC, Sports City)roughly 3,500 - 6,000 (annual rent divided by 12)Bayut and Property Finder, filter by area; add deposit and agent commission as one-off costs
One-bedroom, mid districts (JVC, Al Barsha, Business Bay edges, Al Furjan)roughly 5,500 - 9,000same, compare three areas before choosing
One-bedroom, central (Marina, JLT, Downtown)roughly 8,000 - 14,000 and moresame; proximity to the Metro raises the price
Electricity, water, cooling (DEWA plus chiller where separate)roughly 300 - 800 for a studio or one-bedroom, more in summerDEWA tariffs online; ask the landlord whether cooling is included
Internet and mobileroughly 350 - 600 togetherdu and e& (Etisalat) websites
Public transport passa few hundred for a monthly Nol pass covering the zones you useRTA website, Nol fares
Car instead: small car rental, fuel, Salik tolls, parkingroughly 2,000 - 3,500 all in for a small carrental company websites; a toll gate crossing costs a few AED, fuel prices are published monthly
Health insurance for yourselfusually 0, the employer covers itask for the plan details
Loans, remittances to family, subscriptions you keepyour own figureyour bank statement for the last three months

Step 3: list your variable costs

Variable costs are where Dubai is most flexible and where the "if you know the places" rule applies. The same week can cost 600 or 2,500 AED in food depending on where you shop and how often you eat out.

LineOrientation, AED per month, one personWhere it varies
Groceriesroughly 800 - 1,800Carrefour, Lulu, Union Coop, Viva and Nesto on the lower end; Spinneys, Waitrose and specialty delis on the upper end; compare a basket of ten items online before you move
Eating outroughly 300 - 2,000a meal in a neighbourhood cafeteria costs a fraction of one in a mall restaurant; delivery apps run constant offers
Gym, sport, beach0 - 500public beaches and running tracks are free, chain gyms have monthly plans, many buildings have a gym and a pool
Clothes, personal care, pharmacyroughly 200 - 800sales seasons are real; pharmacy prices are regulated
Entertainment and short tripsroughly 200 - 1,500many free events in the cool season; weekend trips to other emirates are cheap by car
Flights home beyond the annual ticketset aside monthlyfares vary widely by season, so book outside school holidays
First month rulecount the first month at 1.5 times your normal variable budgetcosts run higher while you furnish, register and explore

Step 4: set a savings target and run the formula

The move makes sense when the salary covers life and leaves what you came for: savings, remittances, a deposit on something, a buffer. Decide the target before you look at the offer, otherwise the offer decides it for you.

Three examples by salary tier (examples, not benchmarks)

The figures are illustrations of the method with orientation costs, autumn 2026. Your own lines will differ; that is the point of filling the table yourself. Market salary ranges by role are on our live salary pages and in the salary index.

ExampleIncome, AED per monthRough fixed and variable costsMargin and what it means
Example A: beauty master, basic 5,000 plus commission, staff accommodation and transport provided5,000 basic; commission counted conservatively at 1,500; total 6,500accommodation 0; phone and internet 200; groceries and eating out 1,200; personal 400; total about 1,800about 4,700 a month, which is why many masters save or send home a large share; the trade-off is shared housing and a six-day week
Example B: clinic nurse or administrative specialist, 11,000 total package, no housing11,000studio in an outer district 4,500; utilities and cooling 500; internet and mobile 400; transport pass 350; groceries 1,300; eating out and leisure 900; personal 400; total about 8,350about 2,650 a month; comfortable for one person renting alone, tight for savings; a shared two-bedroom with a colleague would roughly double the margin
Example C: doctor or executive assistant, 25,000 total package, no housing25,000one-bedroom in a mid district 7,500; utilities 700; internet and mobile 500; small car all in 3,000; groceries 1,800; eating out and leisure 2,000; personal and sport 1,000; total about 16,500about 8,500 a month; room for savings, a family visit and an upgrade in the second year; a family changes this table completely, see our guide on moving with a family
All three examplesthe first three months cost more than the table shows: a deposit and commission on the home, furniture, connectionskeep two to three months of costs in reserve before you fly, as our guide on moving to Dubai for work advises

How we help

TLNT is a hiring consultancy. Employers in Dubai ask us to search for specialists against agreed criteria and we assess candidates on practical tasks before introducing them. We advise the employer on a market package as an estimate; the salary and conditions are agreed between the employer and you directly, you are employed directly by the employer's company, the employer sponsors the work visa and we give a step-by-step checklist. We do not give tax or financial advice; this page is a method, not a recommendation.

For candidates: send your CV through our candidates page or build one in the free CV builder; we let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.

Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.

FAQ

Is 8,000 AED a month enough to live in Dubai?

For one person it depends on housing. With employer-provided accommodation 8,000 AED leaves a comfortable margin. Renting a studio alone in an outer district (orientation, autumn 2026: roughly 3,500 - 6,000 AED per month plus utilities) makes it workable but tight for savings; a shared room (roughly 1,500 - 3,000) makes it comfortable again. Run the method on this page with your own lines: fixed costs, variable costs, savings target, and check prices on Bayut, DEWA and RTA before you decide.

What salary do I need to live comfortably in Dubai?

There is no single number; it depends on housing, family and the lifestyle you want. Use the formula: reliable monthly income minus fixed costs minus variable costs equals your margin, then compare the margin with your savings target. Our examples show one person with staff housing on 6,500 AED keeping a large margin, one renting a studio alone on 11,000 keeping a few thousand, and one on 25,000 with a car and a one-bedroom keeping about a third. Check market salaries for your role on our salary index and the offer's package lines before comparing.

How much does it cost to hire through TLNT?

Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract.
