A job offer in Dubai becomes a family decision the moment you have a partner or children. The questions are practical: can I bring them, where will the children study and what does it cost, who pays for their health insurance, what kind of home can we afford, will my partner find work, and who should fly first. This guide answers them calmly and honestly: what is known for sure, what you must check on official portals yourself, what it costs as an orientation range, and why thousands of Russian-speaking families who went through it would do it again. The move is a serious decision. Prepared well, it becomes a good adventure rather than a reckless one.
Talk to usIn the UAE an employee holding a residence visa can usually sponsor a spouse and children once their employment and salary meet the conditions set by the immigration authorities. The exact salary threshold, the documents (attested marriage and birth certificates, a tenancy contract, medical tests for adults) and the processing steps change from time to time, so treat every number you see in a chat or a forum as outdated until you check it.
Dubai has hundreds of private schools with British, American, IB, Indian, French, German and Russian-language curricula, and every one of them is private and paid. Fees are regulated and published: the KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) directory lists each school's fees and inspection rating, which makes comparison easy and honest. The ranges below are an orientation, autumn 2026, check current fees in the KHDA directory and on the school's website.
Admission is usually by assessment and documents, and good schools have waiting lists for some year groups; apply as soon as the offer is firm, even before you fly. The school year runs from late August or September to June with a short winter and spring break; children can join mid-year if there is a place, but the September start is calmest. Fees are usually paid per term, which spreads the cost; ask about sibling discounts and whether the employer offers an education allowance (common for senior medical and management roles, rare for junior ones). Russian-language and bilingual schools and nursery groups exist; most Russian-speaking families still choose a British or IB school and keep Russian at home and in weekend classes. Visit two or three schools on the first trip, with the child if possible; the atmosphere decides more than the rating.
| Tier | What it is | Orientation, AED |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery, full day | Private nurseries from age 1 to 4, often with a Russian-speaking group in areas where families live | roughly 2,500 - 6,000 per month, plus registration and meals |
| School, budget tier | Established schools with a KHDA rating of Good or Acceptable, usually British or Indian curriculum, in outer districts | roughly 15,000 - 35,000 per year |
| School, middle tier | Well-rated schools (Good to Very Good) with strong facilities, most Russian-speaking families choose this tier | roughly 35,000 - 70,000 per year |
| School, premium tier | Outstanding-rated and flagship international schools, IB and British, waiting lists are common | roughly 70,000 - 120,000 and more per year |
| Extras to budget | Registration deposit (usually deducted from fees), uniforms, books, school bus, trips, after-school clubs | a few thousand per child per year on top |
Employers in Dubai are required to provide health insurance for their employees, and the employee's own cover is normally part of every offer. Dependants are a separate question: by Dubai rules the sponsor must insure the people they sponsor, and whether the employer pays for them is a matter of the offer, not of the law.
Rent is the largest line of a family budget in Dubai and the one where knowing the places matters most. The same two-bedroom apartment costs twice as much in a marina tower as in a quiet family community twenty minutes away. Annual rent is the norm, usually paid in one to four cheques, with a refundable deposit and an agent's commission at signing. Check current prices on Bayut, Property Finder or Dubizzle, and take the ranges below as an orientation, autumn 2026.
| Option | Where families look | Orientation, AED per year |
|---|---|---|
| Two-bedroom apartment, family community | Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Motor City, Town Square, Dubailand communities | roughly 75,000 - 120,000 |
| Two-bedroom apartment, central | Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Business Bay, Downtown | roughly 120,000 - 200,000 and more |
| Three-bedroom townhouse | Arabian Ranches, Damac Hills, Town Square, Mudon, Dubai Hills, The Springs | roughly 150,000 - 280,000 |
| Villa with garden | Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Al Barsha | from roughly 250,000 upwards |
| One-off costs at signing | Security deposit (commonly about 5 percent of annual rent for unfurnished homes), agent's commission (commonly around 5 percent of annual rent), Ejari registration, DEWA connection deposit, sometimes a separate chiller (cooling) account | roughly 10 - 12 percent of annual rent plus deposits, mostly refundable or one-off |
| Furniture | Most apartments come unfurnished; second-hand markets and rental furniture soften the cost | a real first-year line, your own figure |
| Rent increases | Regulated by the RERA rental index, which you can check yourself; a landlord cannot raise the rent arbitrarily during a tenancy | check the index for the area before signing |
| The rule that saves the most | Choose the home around the school, not the office: the school run twice a day is the real commute of a family in Dubai; many communities have schools and nurseries inside | time, not money |
A partner who moves on a family visa is not locked out of work. In practice the spouse can take up employment when an employer arranges the work permit under the current MOHRE rules; check the procedure for your case, it is simpler than many people fear. The real question is the job itself.
Most families that settle smoothly follow the same pattern: the person with the job offer flies first, the family follows once the home and the school are ready. Rushing everyone onto one flight to a hotel with no school place and no tenancy is the most common source of stress.
TLNT is a hiring consultancy. Employers in Dubai ask us to search for specialists against criteria agreed at the start; we assess candidates on practical tasks and introduce the ones who meet the criteria. The employer interviews, makes the hiring decision and agrees the terms with you directly; you are employed directly by the employer's company, the employer sponsors the work visa and we give a step-by-step checklist. We do not give immigration or tax advice; family visas, schools and insurance are checked with the authorities and the employer.
For candidates: send your CV through our candidates page or build one in the free CV builder; we let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.
Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.
Usually yes: an employee with a residence visa can sponsor a spouse and children once their employment and salary meet the conditions set by the immigration authorities, and the documents (attested marriage and birth certificates, a tenancy contract) are in place. The conditions change, so check the current rules on ICP or GDRFA Dubai and ask the employer whether they handle the family's visas. Realistic orientation: six to twelve weeks from your first day to the family's residence visas.
Plan the move as a spreadsheet, not a guess: the first rent payment or deposit, the agent's commission, school registration and the first term, flights, furnishing and two to three months of living costs. As an orientation, autumn 2026, a two-bedroom apartment in a family community rents at roughly 75,000 - 120,000 AED per year, a middle-tier school costs roughly 35,000 - 70,000 AED per child per year, a full-day nursery roughly 2,500 - 6,000 AED per month. Check current prices on Bayut, Property Finder and the KHDA directory; the figures depend heavily on the area and the school.
Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract.
