A new assistant is hired on a CV and an interview, but kept on the first 90 days. In that time the principal decides whether this person can be trusted with the calendar, the inbox, the money routine and the family, or whether they remain a helper who needs checking. This article from our School of assistants series gives the plan from the assistant's side (what to learn, what to ask, how to build a weekly rhythm, which mistakes end probation early) and from the employer's side, because onboarding is a shared job and half of early failures come from an absent brief. Probation and notice follow the contract and current UAE labour rules; agree the terms in writing before day one.
Talk to usThe first month is for understanding how the principal actually works, not how the job description said they work. Resist the urge to improve things in week one.
Most principals do not brief; they expect the assistant to ask. Ten questions in the first week prevent most of the surprises of the first quarter.
The second month is where trust turns into delegation. The assistant now owns the routine and the principal only sees exceptions.
The third month is where the assistant starts to see around corners. The job moves from reacting to preparing.
Routine is what makes an assistant reliable. A simple rhythm, agreed with the principal, carries the role.
Most early exits are not about skills. They are about trust, communication and an absent brief. Both sides can prevent them.
TLNT is a hiring consultancy. For employers we help define the role, search for candidates and assess them on real tasks before you meet the shortlist, and we give you a 30-60-90 onboarding checklist for the person you hire; you make the hiring decision and agree the terms with the candidate yourself, the person is employed directly by your company, the employer sponsors the visa and if it does not work out we find a replacement free of charge within the period set in the contract.
For candidates: send your CV through our candidates page or build one in the free CV builder; we let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.
Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.
Learn before changing anything: the principal's key contacts, preferences, systems and private boundaries. Shadow for the first two weeks, drafting replies and calendar moves for approval, write a working handbook, and ask the ten first-week questions about priorities, access, decisions, updates and payment rules. The day-30 goal is no double bookings and no missed urgent message.
Give access on day one, a written brief with 30, 60 and 90 day goals, a list of key contacts and private boundaries, a payment rule and a fixed weekly 20-minute review. Write the probation and notice terms into the contract and follow current UAE labour rules. Most early failures come from an absent brief, not from a lack of skills.
