From assistant to chief of staff how an assistant's career grows in Dubai

After three to five years as an executive or personal assistant, many people in Dubai hit the same ceiling: the work is trusted and well paid, but it is still a support role, and the next step is not obvious. This article maps the realistic routes out of the assistant seat: chief of staff, business or operations manager, house or family office manager. It explains what actually changes in the work, what to learn before you ask, how to negotiate the step with your current employer, and what the market pays, as orientation ranges rather than promises.

Four routes after the assistant role

Market estimate in AED per month, total package, Dubai. The ranges match our assistant salary guide and role pages; they are orientation, not a rate card, and the top of each range depends on the size of the business.

What actually changes in the work

The title is the smallest part of the step. The real change is what you are responsible for and who waits for your answer.

What to learn before you ask for the step

Employers rarely promote an assistant into a chief of staff role because of loyalty alone. They do it when the person already does parts of the job. Build the evidence first.

How to negotiate the step with your employer

The best time to ask is after you have already carried a project to the end, not after a hard week. Bring facts, a proposal and a timeline.

Salary anchors and how to read them

Two chief of staff roles in Dubai can differ by half in pay. Here is what usually decides where in the range a person lands.

How we help

TLNT is a hiring consultancy. For employers we help design the chief of staff, operations or senior assistant role, set the salary range as a market estimate, search for candidates and assess them on real tasks: a project tracker, a one-page decision memo, a follow-up scenario with department heads. You interview, you make the hiring decision and you agree the terms with the candidate; the person is employed directly by your company, the employer sponsors the visa and we give you a step-by-step checklist.

If you are an assistant looking for a role in Dubai, send your CV at /en/candidates/ or build one free at /en/resume/. We let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.

Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.

FAQ

What is the difference between an executive assistant and a chief of staff?

An executive assistant manages the executive's calendar, inbox, travel and communication and is judged on reliability. A chief of staff runs the owner's priorities and projects, follows up with department heads and prepares decisions, and is judged on outcomes. The chief of staff usually has a smaller operational load and a much larger share of responsibility.

How much does a chief of staff earn in Dubai?

Market estimate about 25,000 - 40,000 AED per month as a total package, as orientation: the top depends on the size and complexity of the business. A senior executive assistant to a C-level executive or a private family office earns about 20,000 - 30,000 AED. The employer also pays the visa, health insurance and gratuity provision.
