Candidates prepare for assistant interviews by polishing their list of tools and languages. Owners and executives read that list in ten seconds and then look for something else entirely: can I stop thinking about this part of my life once this person is in the chair. This article from our School of assistants series describes what employers actually value, in their own order of importance: reliability, follow-through, discretion, calm under pressure, proactive communication and written clarity. For each quality we show what it looks like from the owner's chair, how to demonstrate it in a CV, in an interview and in the first month, and which mistakes end trust fastest. Employers can use the same list to decide what to test before an offer.
Talk to usAsk a Dubai owner why they want an assistant and the answer is rarely "to book flights". It is time, calm and trust: time returned to the work only they can do, calm because someone else watches the details, trust because that someone sees everything and keeps it inside. Everything on this page follows from those three.
The first quality and the one most often faked in interviews. Reliability means the owner can give you something and forget it. Follow-through means it is not finished until the loop is closed: done, confirmed, the owner told.
Two qualities that cannot be learned from a course and that owners weigh more heavily than any skill. Discretion is what you do with what you see. Calm is what you do when the day breaks.
The two qualities that separate an assistant from a messenger. Proactive means the owner learns about a problem from you before it reaches them, with a proposed solution. Written clarity means your message is read once and understood.
Put the six qualities into evidence before you meet the employer. Owners decide quickly, and the preparation shows.
Most assistants are not dismissed for lack of skill. They lose the role because trust broke, usually over something that looked small.
TLNT is a hiring consultancy. For employers we turn these six qualities into a practical skills assessment for the specific role, check references with direct principals and introduce the candidates who meet the agreed criteria; you interview, make the hiring decision and agree the terms with the candidate yourself. The person is employed directly by your company, the employer sponsors the visa and we give you a step-by-step checklist.
For candidates: send your CV through our candidates page or build one in the free CV builder; we let you know when an employer has a matching vacancy. Candidates never pay us.
Our fee is fixed for each role and agreed before the search starts. A 10% prepayment of the fee starts the search, the rest is due once the person has started work. If it does not work out, we find a replacement free of charge; the period is set in the contract. Consulting and CRM projects are priced after a free review.
In practice six things, in this order: reliability (ask once and forget it), follow-through (the loop is closed and the owner told), discretion, calm under pressure, proactive communication and written clarity. Tools, languages and years of experience are the entry ticket that gets the interview; the six qualities get the offer and the second year. Owners test them with concrete stories, a practical task and reference calls with direct principals.
Reliability: tell stories with a beginning and an end, including how you confirmed and informed; finish any practical task and say what you would tell the principal; reply to the invitation fast, confirm the day before, arrive early. Discretion: talk about your work, never about former principals or their affairs, decline politely if asked for their details, and offer references on discretion from direct principals.
